In 1941 her mother wrote that "Hilary has had a drawing in Radio Times and did a book cover which Faber liked and have ordered four more", and the following year one of her illustrations appeared in Vogue Magazine.

This work, though not sometimes allowing Hilary to create the sort of images she personally enjoyed, provided a useful income throughout the War years and during the late 1940s.
