DRAWING
Hilary worked hard at developing her skills as a draughtswoman from an early age. A diary entry for January 1936 when she was 20 years old indicates her dogged persistence even when things didn’t go well: “Zoo. It was quite extraordinary how badly I drew for the first hour. I was nearly in despair but suddenly picked up.”
Later in life, drawing was a source of pleasure and relaxation, especially on family holidays to the Mediterranean. Amongst her favourite subjects were animals and people she observed who amused her in some way.
It seems that even giving birth did not distract Hilary from her love of drawing…
